The Ministry of Energy has revealed potential locations for constructing nuclear power plants in Kazakhstan.

The Minister of Energy discussed at a briefing in the department the locations in Kazakhstan being considered for the construction of nuclear power plants, as reported by NUR.KZ.

Journalists noted that the document signed by the Prime Minister does not state that the nuclear power plants will be built near the village of Ulken, as previously reported.

They inquired whether nuclear power plants could be constructed near another settlement in the Almaty region.

"Currently, the main site is the Ulken rural district, where the relevant hearings have already taken place, but the final site will be determined after engineering surveys are completed. These are already underway. If potential vendors propose using another site, we will certainly consider it. However, the final decision will be made after the engineering surveys for this site are completed," said Satkaliev.

In general, according to him, when selecting a location, the authorities consider the need for regional development, ensuring electricity supply, and diversifying the national electrical grid, thus ensuring an appropriate level of reliability.

"The Balkhash site is very promising; I have already mentioned this — up to four units with a capacity of 1200 MW. The Kurchatov site is also quite promising, where two units of 1200 MW can be constructed."

"The MAEK site is also very suitable for building a nuclear power plant; there are many advantages due to the presence of a previously existing station. Considering the stability of the system, a medium-capacity nuclear power plant can also be placed there... We plan to construct at least three nuclear power plants in Kazakhstan in the medium term," summarized the Minister of Energy.

Recall that at the end of January, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev instructed to accelerate the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan and to determine the location for the second nuclear power plant.

Almasadam Satkaliev reported that a referendum will not be required for the construction of the second nuclear power plant.

It should be noted that the day before, Kazakhstan approved the location for the construction of the first nuclear power plant - according to the government decree, the country's first nuclear power plant will be built in the Zhambyl district of the Almaty region.

Today, Satkaliev announced the timelines for the start of construction work on the nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan - according to him, construction work may begin within two years.
