Kazakhstan's forest nurseries are struggling to meet the country's demands.

In Kazakhstan, there are 251 forestry nurseries spread across 3,178 hectares; however, this is insufficient to provide the country with the necessary amount of planting material. This was stated by Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov in response to a parliamentary inquiry.
Лесные питомники Казахстана не успевают удовлетворить нужды страны.

Private nurseries cultivate seedlings that reach a height of 1 meter, but the forest fund requires standard one-year and two-year seedlings measuring 15–20 cm. Private growers do not engage in the cultivation of such young plants, as it is not economically viable.

Seedlings with a closed root system are grown in the state forest reserve "Semei Ormany." This practice is planned to be expanded to other regions of Kazakhstan, including Akmolinsk, Almaty, Kostanay, and East Kazakhstan regions, as well as Atyrau region.

The government supports private businesses by reimbursing up to 50% of expenses for the establishment and development of private forestry nurseries, as well as for planting and growing plantations for industrial and energy purposes over a period of up to 10 years. Through tenders, entrepreneurs can obtain long-term use of land plots from the state forest fund, with no rental fees charged.

"Kursiv" wrote that on June 8, 2023, a major forest fire occurred in the territory of the "Semei Ormany" reserve, resulting in the deaths of 15 foresters. The area affected by the fire was 60,000 hectares.

The government planned to allocate over five hectares of forest from the "Semei Ormany" reserve for the construction of the "Aul" border checkpoint on the Kazakhstan-Russia border.
