Restoration works are currently underway around the Glory Memorial in Almaty. These efforts are timed to coincide with the celebration of the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War and were initiated based on the findings of a commission that assessed the wear and tear of the granite and stone slabs as well as the paving.
The memorial complex has been in existence for 50 years, during which time the granite surface, paving, and stone slabs have significantly deteriorated, with cracks and areas of destruction appearing. No repairs have been conducted here for over 20 years.
In light of this, a decision was made to carry out restoration works while preserving the historical appearance and returning it to its original state.
The works include the cleaning of granite slabs surrounding the center of the Glory Memorial - the pedestal of the Eternal Flame, using sandblasting equipment. Additionally, the granite flagstones will be cleaned and restored, and the paving between the memorial complex and the Ascension Cathedral will be replaced. The restoration work is scheduled to be completed by April 2025.
The initiative for the repair work has been joined by the granddaughter of the famous Hero of the Soviet Union Ivan Panfilov - Alua Baikadamova.
"The slabs at the Eternal Flame have been exposed to atmospheric influences for 50 years - rain, snow, and the scorching sun. In Almaty, we experience significant temperature fluctuations.
"For the past 15 years, skaters, scooter riders, and cyclists who showed no regard for memory and the memorial have contributed to the destruction not only of the concrete layer beneath the slabs but also of the stone that clads the Eternal Flame. This has led to cracks in the slabs that cover the Eternal Flame.
"When the slabs were lifted, it became clear that the concrete had essentially turned to sand, which is clearly visible in the photographs. Today, the damaged concrete is being removed, reinforcement is being replaced, and of course, only the destroyed slabs are being replaced," - noted Alua Baikadamova on social media.
The Park of the 28 Panfilov Guardsmen is a historical, architectural, and memorial reserve. It was named in 1942 in honor of the feat of the 28 Panfilov heroes during the defense of Moscow. Located within the territory of the Glory Memorial, it was opened on May 8, 1975, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
The Akimat also reminds that in the fall of 2024, repairs were conducted on the park's territory along Kazybek Bi Street and around the Panfilov monument. This area required significant updates: the slabs surrounding the monument, as well as the ramps and steps, were in disrepair. As part of the current renovations, granite tiles were laid over an area of 500 square meters, ramps were installed, and a drainage system was implemented.
Additionally, it was previously reported by the Ministry of Labor that veterans of the Great Patriotic War will receive financial assistance of 5 million tenge for Victory Day.
According to the ministry, as of January 20, there are 120 veterans of the Great Patriotic War (GPW) living in Kazakhstan. Furthermore, there are 42,545 citizens in the country who contributed to the victory in the GPW.
A few days ago, the Ministry of Defense of Kazakhstan showcased the official logo for the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War and detailed how the parade in honor of the 80th anniversary of the GPW would take place in Astana. The ministry noted that approximately 2.5 billion tenge will be spent on the military parade in Astana - covering expenses for fuel, spare parts, troop movements, uniform tailoring, travel expenses, and more.
Recall that in October 2024, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev spoke about the celebration of the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. According to him, the anniversary unites all the peoples of the CIS, symbolizing the triumph of the ideas of freedom and justice.
"We must always remember the unparalleled feats of our fathers and mothers, all the veterans of the war, and the workers on the home front," - stated the president at that time.
