Kazakhstan aims to increase its gas imports from Turkmenistan.

The head of QazaqGaz, Sanjar Zharakeshov, traveled to Ashgabat to negotiate new gas supplies to Kazakhstan. During his visit, he met with the Minister of Turkmenistan and the head of TurkmenGaz, Maksat Babaev.

“During the meeting, it was agreed to intensify the work of the joint expert group. In particular, issues related to the import of Turkmen gas and the progress of geological exploration projects were discussed,” reports Zharkeshov on social media.

The negotiations began back in 2022 when Kazakhstan faced a gas shortage. At that time, QazaqGaz and "Turkmengaz" signed a contract for supplies, resulting in 405.5 million cubic meters of resources delivered in 2023. Later, the President of Kazakhstan, after a conversation with the Turkmen leader, expressed a desire for a long-term agreement and to increase supplies to 1.5 billion cubic meters annually, as additionally reported by the channel “Oil and Gas of Kazakhstan.”

It was previously reported that QazaqGaz plans to accelerate the construction of a second line for the gas pipeline that is currently operating at capacity.
