According to the Information portal, the social network TikTok is preparing to shut down its application in the USA on Sunday in accordance with a ban that is expected to take effect, as reported by Kazpravda.kz citing RIA Novosti.
“TikTok is preparing to deactivate its application on Sunday in accordance with the ban that is expected to come into force,” the portal reports.
In April 2024, the sitting US President Joe Biden signed a law that mandates TikTok to be managed by an American company under the threat of a ban on its operations in the States, which could take effect as early as January 19. According to the document obtained by RIA Novosti, elected President Donald Trump urged the Supreme Court to delay the enforcement of the ban on the Chinese social network so that he could resolve the dispute after his inauguration on January 20.
TikTok is an application for creating and viewing short videos, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance. It was launched in 2018. The social network is under close scrutiny by US authorities, who are concerned that the Chinese government might demand user data or use the app to spread propaganda. The company that owns TikTok has repeatedly disagreed with these concerns. In the US, TikTok has approximately 170 million users.
