The China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) has announced the completion of drilling the deepest vertical well in Asia, reports Kazpravda.kz citing Xinhua.
The well is located in the Taklamakan Desert within the Tarim Basin of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China.
In addition to oil and gas extraction, "Shengditake-1" is intended for geological research. The well descends through 12 geological formations and reaches rock layers that are over 500 million years old.
